You’re Welcome: Story Behind The Song.
You’re Welcome has been out in the world for a full month!! Crazy how this song came to be three years ago. Then, shortly after I finished my Best Years EP, I went into the studio and recorded You’re Welcome two years ago. I wanted to look toward the future to plan my next single and this song just felt right. I needed something sassy and fun.
I wrote You’re Welcome after I had a conversation with one of my friends. Her ex-boyfriend was getting married and she felt some type of way about it. She said to me, “Carson, how have you been so okay with all of your exes getting married and living happily ever after? Doesn’t it bother you?”
Ouch. Thanks for the reminder that all but one of my exes is happily married haha. All jokes aside, I had never really thought much about it. I didn’t feel some sense of longing for what could’ve been because they had all been the wrong person for me. If we were meant to be we would still be together!
As I contemplated my friend’s question more I remembered something that an ex boyfriend’s mom posted to her Facebook after we broke up:
The love of your life comes after the mistake of your life.
A little harsh in my opinion, but when you’re the one doing the breaking up I guess a little animosity is to be expected. What was probably meant to hurt my feelings ended up being a really great mindset shift for me. She was 100% right. If I was the “mistake” of all my exes lives then I helped them find the love of their lives too. If I had stayed with any of them knowing that it wasn’t a right fit then they would’ve never found their actual right fit. So… technically…. You’re Welcome!
Andddd let’s be honest, some of them were real duds. I felt a little bad for all the poor girls hitching their wagon to them forever. I guess I can’t take the high road all of the time... Even I have my limits haha.
Thus, You’re Welcome was born.
I sat at my piano one day and it flowed right out of me. I wanted it to sound like a wedding crasher song, but not because I’m so in love with the groom. I wanted it to be more of a, “Bless your heart. I’ll be praying for you,” vibe.
Fast forward to talking with my producer Keith Harris. We had just finished recording the Best Years EP and he looked and said, “Wanna start working on the next one?”
Of course I said, “YES! I have the perfect song.”
In comes the fun choir background vocals, groovy piano, and attention getting beat.
After our studio days it was time to plan the music video. Oh, yeah! IT’S OUT TODAY!
If you’ve been following along for a while then you know I’ve filmed my last several music videos with my own camera and the help of my mom. This one would be no different except this time we wanted to tell a story. I was very intimidated by doing a story centric music video because all of the editing would fall on me and I wanted it to make sense. My mom suggested a runaway bride themed story. I loved it! So, we reached out to Flake Haven, a wedding venue in my hometown, and they let us come on a week day to get all the shots we needed. My pop came over after we filmed all the venue shots and brought his side by side so we could film running shots down my parent’s driveway.
My pop tart driving the side by side for the music video.
I can honestly say, this might be one of my favorite videos I’ve done so far. A major thank you to Leigh Ann with Flake Haven, my Mom for helping me film everything, and my sweet pop tart for being the best transportation a girl could ask for.
All in all, You’re Welcome is a fun song with a lot of truth hidden behind the humor. I hope you guys enjoy it. Thank you for reading this and for all the support! Make sure you listen to You’re Welcome and tag me if you share it!
